Welcome International Students
By Joe Docherty, International Director

On behalf of the international office at the University of Portsmouth, I would like to welcome you to the UK and to the City of Portsmouth. Studying abroad is an exciting adventure as well as a major life transition. For many of you this is the first time away from home. Whilst you may be looking forward to all the opportunities that come with living in a foreign country, you may also feel apprehensive about the many unknowns.

Before you left your country, you may have wished to be more independent of your family. Now perhaps you find yourself left alone too much. You may encounter too many choices, too much freedom, too little direction and guidance. You may feel disoriented by the different sights, smells, sounds and tastes. British values, traditions and habits may be confusing. You may wonder how you...

Mix and Match update

Welcome Back to Portsmouth and Hello to our New Members!

Mix and Match has been up and running for one year and has proven to be very successful. We have had 50 new members since August alone, bringing the current total to 251. Some of you have attended last year’s events such as bowling, a festive celebration and a cooking competition in the professional kitchens of Anglesea Building. We hope to hold similar events this year and some new ones too!

Our most popular event ‘Speed Matching’ is back on Monday 20th October from 3pm to 5pm in Nuffield Centre Main Hall. This is the chance for new students to meet other members and for existing students to welcome the new arrivals. Drinks and snacks will be available.

What’s new? The Mix and Match Café...

‘Travel thousands of miles. Read thousands of books’

The old Chinese saying states that “the goal of meaningful life is to absorb knowledge both from books and journey.” Books provide the first sight of knowledge in order to apply in practical life as well as learn from everyday life to enlighten people.

When I first came to the UK, I asked myself what kind of knowledge I really want to gain whilst studying in UK. Would be studying in the library all day in order to get good marks or learning about foreign cultures through different ways? Finally, I chose the latter one and spent all my holidays travelling in different countries. I visited five continents including....

Student profile

Meseret Alemu BUTTA is doing a Masters in Advanced Manufacturing Technology and is from Ethiopia. She is studying here with a prestigious Chevening Scholarship from the British Government. Under this scheme the Foreign Office singles out the young leaders of tomorrow. Here she talks to Joe Docherty about her experience.

Not many people here know about my country. It’s in the Horn of Africa and is full of culture and history. Our monasteries and churches are world famous. There’s been some tragedy in recent times due to war and under the governments of Haile Selassie and Mengistu, but I love my country. I’m friendly with another Ethiopian girl at Portsmouth College and we like to listen to music from home and to cook our special dishes, like Doro (a chicken main dish) and Chiko (barley butter, eaten at breakfast). I do like some English food, like ....
