MAGPI 2006: The Year in Review
For this first issue of the MAGPI Newsletter, and given the time of year, I think it is appropriate to reflect on the numerous accomplishments throughout the region.
Growth and Development
In January, 2006 there were approximately 200 institutions connected, representing every aspect of the research and educational communities. Today, there are more than 450 school districts, intermediate units, community colleges, universities, hospitals, libraries, museums, and research centers using advanced networking as a means of achieving their academic and research objectives.

Scholars and philosophers have long referred to mountains as symbols of enlightenment. Many a prophet has been said to have brought important messages “down from the mountain” to give to the people. Saint Francis University, in rural Loretto, PA, faced this challenge quite literally in bringing music education to the masses from their campus in the Appalachian Mountains, this time with a good dose of help from MAGPI and Internet2.

RJ Stangherlin's English 10 class from Salisbury High School is participating in the "Stand Up. Speak Out. Lend a Hand!" videoconference project, a collaboration between MAGPI and the Gerda and Kurt Klein Foundation. The class was asked to create a multimedia introduction for the speaker, Holocaust survivor Gerda Weissman Klein, for the kick-off videoconference on November 16, 2006. After participating in the kick-off event, Stangherlin received this article from the students and she was kind enough to share it with the rest of the MAGPI community.

Immersive Real-Time Professional Development for Science Teachers
A Collaboration between NASA, The Franklin Institute and UMBC
The Franklin Institute Science Museum has a long history of providing innovative professional development experiences for K-12 science teachers. Over the past decade, those experiences have increasingly made use of new technologies. This Fall, the Institute partnered with the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) and the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) to develop a program that enabled teachers to interact with scientists in real-time while also engaging with real science data sets and cutting-edge visualizations of them.

Health Sciences Update
FCC Funding Opportunity, Northeast Pennsylvania Rural Health Information Organization, and more....

On September 26, 2006, the Federal Communications Commission announced a new funding program aimed at rural healthcare and telemedicine initiatives. Applicants may submit grant requests to initiate pilot programs to create broadband communications infrastructure to connect rural hospitals and healthcare systems to regional or state-wide networks and Internet2.
